Το ιταλικό υποβρύχιο «Ντελφίνο» είχε αποπλεύσει από το ναύσταθμο στο Παρθένι της Λέρου το βράδυ της 14ης Αυγούστου, με αποστολή να πλήξει εχθρικά πλοία στην Τήνο, και τη Σύρο και στη συνέχεια να αποκλείσει τη Διώρυγα της Κορίνθου.
Το υποβρύχιο βρέθηκε τις πρωινές ώρες της 15ης Αυγούστου έξω από το λιμάνι της Τήνου «εν καταδύσει», με σκοπό να τορπιλίσει πλοία, που μετέφεραν προσκυνητές, αλλά που οι Ιταλοί τα θεωρούσαν "οπλιταγωγά".
Από το περισκόπιο του ιταλικού υποβρύχιου ο κυβερνήτης Τζουζέπε Αϊκάρντι αναγνώρισε το «εύδρομο» Ελλη και στις 8.25 π.μ., λίγη ώρα πριν από τη λιτάνευση της εικόνας της Παναγίας κι ενώ στην παραλία υπήρχε πολύς κόσμος, το «Ντελφίνο» εξαπέλυσε τρεις τορπίλες.
Η μία τορπίλη έπληξε καίρια την ΕΛΛΗ στο μηχανοστάσιο και τις δεξαμενές πετρελαίου. Η «ΕΛΛΗ» βυθίστηκε φλεγόμενη, στις 09:45΄ παίρνοντας μαζί της του 9 νεκρούς της.
Οι 24 τραυματίες, παρελήφθησαν από δυο ψαράδικα.

Ο φον Έρμπαχ μετέφερε τα όσα του είπε ο Μεταξάς στον Γκράτσι, ώστε να μάθει τις προθέσεις της Ιταλίας, ο δε Γκράτσι επιφυλασσόμενος να απαντήσει μέχρι να λάβει οδηγίες από την Ρώμη μετέδωσε τις πληροφορίες στο ιταλικό υπουργείο εξωτερικών, στον Τσιάνο.
ΥΓ. Το « Ντελφίνο» καθελκύστηκε στις 27 Απριλίου 1930 και ανέλαβε υπηρεσία 19 Ιουνίου 1931.Στις 23 Μαρτίου 1943 βυθίστηκε μια ώρα μετά τον απόπλου από την βάση του στον Τάραντα , μετά από σύγκρουση με το σκάφος συνοδείας του. Χάθηκαν, 28 μέλη του πληρώματος.

I do not know if the Americans also asked Kosovo to shelter Afghans who were exposed as friends and supporters of allied armies; I wish that if yes, the government of Kosovo responds positively, for its honor and Kosovo of course.
But I would like to point out that at the NATO Summit, I was the one who raised this concern, about the lives of the Alliance's Afghan collaborators after its withdrawal from Afghanistan.
