With thousands of vaccine doses flowing into Georgia, health clinic officials said Monday they are lifting the restrictions that barred many people from receiving swine flu protection.
County health clinics across metro Atlanta -- Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett and Clayton -- said that they are making the vaccine available to the general public. The clinics are following a state recommendation.
The shortages are waning at a time when swine flu is no longer considered widespread in Georgia, and state officials are reporting the least amount of deaths and hospitalizations in three months.
Still, federal health officials say they fear the virus could flare up again as the nation enters the heart of flu season over the next three months.
The county clinics had been limiting availability for more than a month to people considered in "high priority groups," such as children, pregnant women, the caretakers of infants and people with health conditions that could worsen flu symptoms.
"We are pleased to be able to offer the vaccine to any resident wanting the protection," said Fulton County health director Dr. Patrice Harris. "Being able to vaccinate more people allows us to increase efforts to stop the spread of the (swine) flu virus."
Fulton will lift its restrictions Wednesday, though several metro county clinics did so Monday.
The increased availability of swine flu vaccine is a sign that vaccine shortages are easing, officials said. The vaccine has also reached more doctors offices and pharmacies.
Vaccine is still free at county health clinics, though pharmacies and other private health providers charge an administrative fee of about $20.
DeKalb health officials, having received their largest shipment of vaccine, said that 32,000 doses of both the injectable form and nasal mist are available. Cobb officials say they have more than 25,000 doses.
The federal government has allocated 2.2 million doses to Georgia, double the amount of a month ago. The delivery of swine flu vaccine has lagged across the nation.
The Georgia health department has a electronic finder for flu vaccine providers on its Web site at http://sendss.state.ga.us/sendss/!immuprov_track.h1n1_prov_locator.
Vaccine supply still varies in some places, as some doctors and pharmacies await shipments. Some say they have already run out. Demand has diminished among those in the priority groups, but is high among others, especially senior citizens, said Ravae Graham, spokeswoman for the state Department of Community Health.
"I've got a whole ton of it now," said Richard Noell at Olde Time Pharmacy in Holly Springs.
